Does it really work?
Yes, it does indeed, many people have had operations under the influence of hypnotherapy, as a dentist you can now take an hypnodontic course, this great news meaning that hypnotherapy is now becoming main stream. Can any/everyone be hypnotised?
Yes pretty much, as long as you can listen and follow instruction you can be hypnotised, its a completely natural process that everyone goes through at least twice a day: going to sleep and waking up, hypnosis is simply a stage between asleep and awake where your hearing is still alert. its one of the most natural states to be in.
What happens during hypnotherapy?
Your hypnotherapist will guide you into a state of deep relaxation, where you will hopefully feel very relaxed, they will then give you positive suggestions.
How does Hypnotherapy work?
Your brain is similar to a computer we programme it with our suggestions, good or bad, suggestions when repeated are very powerful and mould your character, personality, beliefs etc. During hypnotherapy you are guided to a very relaxed state, asked to imagine a peaceful relaxing place, (this keeps your conscious brain active) allowing suggestion to go directly to your subconscious, this is where beliefs and habits are stored, in this state a habit can be changed quite quickly.
If you have ever driven to work, thinking of what you’re going to cook for dinner, arrive at your destination and wonder how on earth you managed, well that was your subconscious brain reverting to a habit (you following the same route everyday) whilst your conscious brain was busy. when you change jobs you will have to consciously change the habit, or, if you are on autopilot you will end up at the wrong place.
How affective is hypnotherapy?
This is where the debate comes in, Hypnotherapy has varying degrees of success, dependant on different factors, if a person is open minded, committed to the process and relaxes easily hypnotherapy can produce astonishing results. I hear very often “I had a session for stopping smoking and I started smoking after 6 months again” Hypnosis is not always a magic wand, although for a few that take on suggestion easily it can be. Hypnosis very often takes you a percentage of the way, the rest is up to you and your commitment. Hypnotherapy changes your habits, if you then consciously decide to start again that doesn’t mean it didn’t work. If you go on a diet lose weight, then change your eating habit and gain weight, the diet didn’t stop working, you did.
How many sessions are needed?
Again this depends on you, how suggestible you are and how easily you relax in the session. Removing a habit takes more effort than planting a new one. some therapist offer CDs or MP3s to back up the session, if you keep listening you will have a much higher success rate.
Can I get stuck in hypnosis?
No, some people enjoy the process so much they don’t want to wake up, but they do, if your therapist were to leave during your session, you would just fall asleep and then wake up naturally.
